Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
