European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
