Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
