In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
