Each time a prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
